Amir Bar-Lev (USA 2007, 82 min)

Director Amir Bar-Lev in person.
Presented by the San Francisco Film Society Youth Education Program in partnership with the M.H. de Young Museum

Filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev’s documentary served as the kickoff for a day of close examination of the modern art world. The film follows a four-year-old girl hailed—and then doubted—as a prodigy of abstract impressionist painting. After the film an intense discussion took place with questions about the objectivity of filmmaking and journalism and the identification of modern art. Bar-Lev encouraged the students to become active viewers of both film and traditional visual art, and even to question his own work that they had just viewed. The discussion continued with a slide presentation by a museum representative about the next part of the students’ day, a guided tour through the museum’s Warhol Live exhibit.

I wanted to thank you so much for the fabulous movie, meet the director, Warhol exhibit. The kids and I enjoyed ourselves so much. We talked about the movie for days and spent a great deal of time analyzing different aspects of art. . . . We have recommended the movie to everyone we know. I would also like to compliment you and all of the organizers of this program. We were treated very respectfully, as were all of the children and teachers present. You don't always see that. I love to see children spoken to as intelligent, thoughtful deeply thinking people and you accomplished that. This has been one of the best field trips we have taken (and as homeschoolers we take a lot). —Zoe Jacobson, parent/teacher, Pathways Charter School
