A2E Direct Distribution Lab
|At the 2013 San Francisco International Film Festival, the San Francisco Film Society will pilot the first of its A2E (Artist to Entrepreneur) programs.
A2E Direct Distribution Lab is a collaborative event working to prove direct distribution a successful financial and creative option for independent filmmakers.
Over three days filmmakers, technology partners & distribution experts will consider and strategize with new models of audience outreach and engagement to determine how each film may best engage audiences in the digital age.
The question for independent filmmakers used to be ‘What’s the most valuable way to give my rights away?’. A2E’s Direct Distribution Lab changes that question to ‘What is the most valuable way to retain my rights and engage directly with my audience’.A2E’s DDL In today's marketplace well-conceived release & engagement campaigns are essential for independent films to effectively reward both creators & their supporters – in fact they are needed just so our artists can properly evaluate their options. We all have access to the technology to distribute films without relinquishing long term control of the work we generated; we just need to learn how to do it in a practical, profitable and sustainable manner.
A2E’s DDL is a pilot version of a blueprinting lab focused on the direct distribution & engagement of narrative feature films (documentaries may be considered going forward). Through an “open source” and collaborative approach, the Direct Distribution Lab will not only connect artists, services, tools, and tech partners but also build custom plans for the filmmakers to utilize. We are looking to define best practices for independent films as platforms evolve and improve.
A2E’s DDL will team filmmakers with specialized distribution consultants, connecting all in a series of one on one meetings with key platform builders and tool developers to design a comprehensive engagement strategy for the self or hybrid release of their films. Select projects committed to a direct distribution approach will then be presented to potential funders & collaborators with a hope of making this engagement strategy a reality.
